Abstract:
This study investigates the difficulties pronouncing vowels encountered by first semester female students from Alasmarya Islamic University college of Arts. The aim of the study is to find the problematic sounds and the factors that cause these problems and then find some techniques that help the students improve their pronunciation, the instrument used for collecting data was an oral test. The data collected were analyzed both statistically and descriptively. The findings of the study revealed that the students had problems in pronouncing some English vowels that have more than one way of pronunciation. Based on the findings, the study concluded that factors such as the differences in the sound system in the two languages and inconsistency of English sounds militate against students of English competence in pronunciation.
