Abstract:
This study investigates the difficulties that face students in vowel sounds learning, which experienced by learners whose first language is Arabic in Libyan accent. The research sample are 40 female students who complete the phonetics course at English department of faculty of Ats. Alasmarya Islamic University. The methods are questioner and short test.
The finding of study is concluded that female students face difficulties in vowel sounds learning due to the influence of mother tongue language. Furthermore, the problems are formed as a result of the usage of language lab is completely absent. Moreover, the usage of modern technology during the lectures is not available.
In addition, the time of the phonetics course lectures is not enough to comprehend the vowel sounds in correct way. Finally, the researchers have provided recommendations for college management, English department, teachers and students to avoid the difficulties in learning vowel sounds. Also add suggestions for advanced researchers.
