Abstract:
This study aims to investigate the impact of using the mother tongue on the students speaking ability. It seeks to find out students' and teachers' attitudes toward the use of the mother language in EFL classes at the Faculty of Arts in Alasmarya University Zliten. The researchers used a Quantitative research method. Data collection was carried out by handing out questionnaires to students and teachers and then analyzed statistically and descriptively. The samples were 30 female students and 10 teachers who are studying and teaching in the first and second semesters at the college. The results have shown that different reasons affect students speaking skills. Also, teachers and students hold different
perceptions. Students consider that using their mother tongue facilitates their achievement while teachers confirm that using MT has a negative influence on speaking Performance but they somehow supported their wise use of it.
